4 Promises to Those Rooted in Truth

truth

Here at The Rooted Truth, it’s our deepest desire for you to grow in your walk with the Lord. In order for a plant to grow, it must be rooted in good soil (Matthew 13:23) and the same is true for you. Lies, deception, disconnection from reality—these things are not good, and in order for growth to happen in your life, you must be rooted in something good, and that something good starts with truth.

Are you ready to get rooted in truth?

What is truth?

Our world today encourages us each to boldly “speak our truth.” We’re taught to ask others, “What’s your truth?”. But here is where the problem lies. What if “my truth” is in opposition to “your truth”? How can two opposing “truths” both be true? The good news (and spoiler alert) is that there is only one truth and one way for us to discern it from the noise of the world. So let’s dive into some really amazing Scriptures that will give us a firm foundation on what exactly truth is.

We learn that God’s word is truth from a prayer that Jesus prayed to His Father. He said:

Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.

John 17:17

And doesn’t it make perfect sense that the Creator of everything would be the One to determine truth? God is the only One who can say “My truth” because His truth and the truth are the same.

Throughout the New Testament the disciples were always quick to point to God, being sure all knew that nothing was of their own effort, nor was it their message or words. Paul said,

All Scripture is God-breathed.

2 Timothy 3:16a

We can clearly see in just a few verses that God’s Word is truth. But just wait until you see the amazing depth this is taken to in the book of John, where he tells us:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

John 1:1,14

Did you catch that? John is telling us that Jesus is the Word, and not only is Jesus the Word, but He is God. And since He is God then any word He speaks is God’s Word and therefore truth.

I am the way, the truth and the life.

John 14:6a

Jesus is truth, God’s truth. It always comes back to Jesus.

So, let’s keep going because this is about to get even more exciting!

If you have placed your faith in Jesus and His gift of salvation, then you’ve received His Holy Spirit, also known as the Spirit of truth.

But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.

John 15:26

However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

John 16:13

Isn’t that incredible?! Because of the Holy Spirit, we do not have to strive, seek, and scour, all in the hopes of finding what we’re looking for. You are sealed with the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of truth, and He promises to guide you into all truth and He will speak. The Holy Spirit is God and since He is God then any word He speaks is God’s word and therefore truth. That's right, the same as when God or Jesus speaks. And what does the Holy Spirit speak of? He will testify of Me. Jesus. Remember, it always comes back to Jesus.

To be rooted in truth is to be rooted in Jesus and His word, the Bible.

What does it mean to be rooted?

The roots of a plant provide it with everything it needs from the soil and that plant needs to be rooted in good soil, full of water and nutrients. You need to be rooted in truth in order to find your water—Jesus, the Living Water—and nutrients—His word, the Bible.

A plant’s roots anchor it to the ground, holding it steady and sustaining it when storms come along. If you are rooted in Jesus then you will be anchored to Him, and He will hold you and sustain you to withstand the storms of life. And the storms of life will come.

Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord,

And whose hope is the Lord.

For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters,

Which spreads out its roots by the river,

And will not fear when heat comes;

But its leaf will be green,

And will not be anxious in the year of drought,

Nor will cease from yielding fruit.

Jeremiah 17:7-8

And here’s a beautiful reminder for you today of our Father’s lovingkindness and great mercy to us. While Jesus is the One who we are to be rooted in, it is Jesus Himself who is the Root.

“And in that day there shall be a Root of Jesse,

Who shall stand as a banner to the people;

For the Gentiles shall seek Him,

And His resting place shall be glorious.”

Isaiah 11:10

“I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things in the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star.”

Revelation 22:16

To be rooted in truth is to be rooted in Jesus. Jesus is the Truth and Jesus is the Root. It always comes back to Jesus!

4 Promises to those rooted in truth

Jesus has made some incredible promises to those who are rooted in truth.

1. He promises to be near to all who call on Him in truth:

The LORD is near to all who call on Him,

To all who call on Him in truth.

Psalm 145:18

2. He promises that those who abide in His Word (the Bible, Jesus Himself) will know the truth (Jesus) and the truth (Jesus) will set you free:

“If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

John 8:31b-32

3. He promises that since the root (Jesus) is holy, so are the branches which are all who are connected and rooted in Him:

If the root is holy, so are the branches.

Romans 11:16b

4. He promises that those who are rooted in love (God is love - 1 John 4:8) will comprehend with the saints and know the love which surpasses knowledge:

So that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled to all the fullness of God.

Ephesians 3:17-19

Are you ready to get rooted in truth?

At The Rooted Truth, our key Scripture is Colossians 2:6-7:

As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.

We want to know the truth and share the truth, because it is only through that truth that we will have everything Jesus died to give us, that we will know His love, that lives will be changed, and that captives will be set free. Come find Jesus with us and be rooted and built up in Him.
